Born in Northern Ireland, Mark Francis studied painting at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. His art practice is poised between abstraction and representation. Francis’s wet-on-wet paintings and prints derive from his interest in biological and cellular forms and refer to man’s internal environment or biology.
Drawing influence from scientific—often microscopic—imagery of fungi, fauna, geology, and insects, among other subjects, Mark Francis paints in an abstract vocabulary of stark colour contrasts and dots and grids that resemble cellular structures. Francis produces paintings with a wet-on-wet technique, creating smooth, soft-focused images with a photo-like finish.
His work has been shown nationally and internationally and is represented in significant public and private collections.
The Hamilton House art collection includes this amazing piece entitled “Pagoda” by Mark Francis and we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy it every day!
